How to Replace a Saab 9-3 Key

The Saab 9-3 has a great amount of appeal for drivers. It is powerful and has good visibility. It has a very high safety rating.

However, it's important to make sure that you have at the very least two keys that work for your vehicle. If you lose the only key, it could be very costly to buy a new one.

How to Replace the Ignition Key on the Saab 9-3

If the car key won't engage in the ignition it is time to replace it. This guide will guide you through the steps to do it on the Saab 9-3. You'll need to replace the key, purchase a new reprogrammable cell, and buy a brand new case for your key-fob.

Unlike older models, most modern Saab vehicles use an electronic transponder inside the key-fob rather than a physical key to unlock and start the vehicle. The rechargeable batteries contained in the key-fob inevitably become worn out and will not be able to hold charge. This is particularly relevant if you continue to use the same key with the same lock.

The good news is that it is easily replaced by a professional locksmith. If you've got the right tools and patience you can do it yourself. The first step is to disassemble the key-fob apart. Insert an open-ended head into the slot in the middle of your case. The plastic is thin, and can easily be damaged.

Once the case has been opened, you can create the new key by combining lower part of the key from earlier with transponder and banana. This will ensure that the new key is connected to the CIM properly, which can make all the difference when replacing the sole key for your Saab 9-3.

If you don't have two keys, you'll need to take off the dashboard and steering wheel to get to the ignition. Start by disconnecting the negative battery cable. Once the battery is disconnected, it is possible to remove the dashboard and trim pieces that surround the steering wheel. Once the dash is removed, insert a screwdriver in the opening behind the ignition switch.

The ignition cylinder is equipped with a key lock which could prevent the vehicle from starting if it does not contain the key. If the ignition switch on your 900 isn't working properly, check whether the key is inside the lock or is stuck inside the barrel. It's also a good idea to rotate your keys on a regular basis and keep them clean so that one doesn't become bent.

Saab cars differ from other vehicles in that they don't make use of traditional keys made of metal. Instead, the car recognizes the electronic signals generated by the key fob through a chip that is specifically designed for it.

If you lose your sole working key fob, the dealer will charge you the highest dollar to replace the computer module (known as the CIM). But we can reprogram your computer's EEPROM, and then prepare it to accept new keys without replacing it. You'll save 50% off the price of the dealer! We call it the SAAB KEY PROGRAM. The metal part of the classic Saab keys is easy to duplicate and doesn't pose a serious threat to vehicle theft. The electronic portion of the key-fob has an electronic chip that detects the car when the key is inserted into the ignition switch.

Saab's anti-theft system has relied on this technology for over a decade. It's not quite as effective as a physical lock for your door however, it makes the theft of your car a lot harder. Every Saab owner needs to keep an extra Saab key in their car.

The majority of new Saabs come with two keys in the factory, but you can upgrade them at an agent using a handheld computer known as Tech-2. Tech-2. The cost can be under $400 for the transmitter+transponder (different than the metal key blade/shell that opens the doors and turns the ignition cylinder). The only exception is NG 9-3 cars, that have newer, more modern features that require a separate key-fob to operate using a different procedure.

If you lose all keys in the event of a loss, the dealer will replace your CIM or TWICE modules and charge you the cost of replacement. We can reprogram your computer's EEPROM to accept new keys, without replacing expensive modules.
